The mystery of the death of the Japanese F-35: a Monstrous explosion on Board?

On May 7, the Minister of self-defense Forces of Japan Takeshi Iwaya made an official statement: the search group found parts of the flight recorder of the fifth-generation fighter Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, which crashed on April 9, 2019.

Recall, the invisible plane took off from the Misawa air base in Northern Japan, and disappeared from the radar during a training flight. The pilot managed to report to the base that interrupts the training mission but did not say a word about the problems on Board. Immediately began the search, but in hot pursuit managed to find only part of the tail.

According to Avaya, “May 3 or after” was restored part of the flight recorder, which suggests that the “black box” was found earlier — somewhere in the third decade of April. At the same time, the Minister of Self-defense forces admitted that the device was damaged, which is unlikely to help restore the picture of the disaster. “The Defense Ministry is studying (details), but at the moment the most important memory (flight recorder) has not been restored.” Japanese Newspapers have already written that the discovery does not give anything, although still the place of discovery is kept secret.

Western media claim that Russia and China are trying to find the remains of the aircraft, but American and Japanese officials do not allow even such a thought. Acting defense Minister Patrick Shanahan firmly promised that nothing OTF-35A Lightning II will not get Russia or China. However, the newspaper “Asahi Shimbun”, referring to a source in the government, does not exclude the possibility of detection of Russian or Chinese wreckage. An insider from the Abe Cabinet explained to reporters: “The fact that our military made every effort to find one fighter shows that it contained a high concentration of military secrets… which can be extracted even from one part of a small fragment.”

The rivalry between the US and the Land of the rising sun in search off-35 remains is striking. “The Japanese are there in the lead — confessed Patrick Shanahan. — But we have a chance if what they have is not enough.” The words of the acting Minister of defense of the United States sound strange and even muddy. Say, if the “friends” will not work, the Americans will be able to. Looks like the Yankees are not interested in the success of the search operation of the self-defense Forces.

And anyway — what is this “opportunity,” which hinted at the Pentagon? Most likely, we can talk about the lighthouse, which is available on the second not found “black box”. After all, in another way to detect the plane is virtually impossible, as the Japanese explored literally the entire area of the alleged fall. But more on that later.

It is known that recorders for F-35 are made by the American company L-3 Technologies which delivers “black boxes” practically to all aircraft of the USA and EU, both military, and civil.

Back in 2004, L-3 Communications announced that its division was Electrodynamics, Inc. it was selected by Lockheed Martin for the development and production of the modern memory block, able to withstand all kinds of disaster the F-35. In turn, Electrodynamics signed a contract with the Turkish company Elektronik Sanayi, which, in fact, collects these devices under license L-3.

The contract between L-3 Communications and Lockheed Martin suggests that Electrodynamics will produce recorders for 2,500 aircraft. The choice was quite natural because Electrodynamics has already produced recorders for bombers B-1B and B-2, as well as for the fifth-generation fighter F-22. The “black boxes” survived all the catastrophes, including the explosion of ammunition on Board the B-1B, on 4 April 2008 at the air base, “al-Udeid air base”.

In terms of reference, Lockheed Martin said that the recorder for Lightning II must have uniquely protective properties — “to survive in conditions of terrible radiation and save data after a direct lightning strike.”

If for civil aircraft in the manufacture of the body of the recorders is mainly used high-strength steel, for the F-35, probably used titanium alloys. This, as an option for special orders, said on the website L-3 Communications. There is no doubt that invisible plane money is not spared.

The fact is that the survivability of the “black boxes” should be prohibitive, including in the conditions of giant single strikes. In particular, if you believe the advertising stealth aircraft, its recorder is able to withstand the impact force of 3400g (3400 times the force of gravity) for 6.5 milliseconds.

To make it clear what we are talking about, here are a few facts.

1g is the power that a person experiences when standing on his feet.

12g — overload in the fighter during the missile maneuvers at speeds of MACH 2.

25g is a single blow during a car accident at a speed of 90 km/h.

The Americans smashed the F4 fighter against a concrete wall at 600 km/h and found that the mannequins had experienced a single hit of 65g, and the key parts of the engine — 700g.

The impact force of a depleted uranium projectile impacting the tank’s armor from a distance of 100 meters from the gun is estimated at 10000g. There is information (though not officially confirmed) that the flight recorder for the F-35 in a special container was fired from an artillery gun without any loss of data.

That is, we are talking about a device that will collapse only in the epicenter of a strong explosion. Or under the influence of high temperatures for a long period of time. In particular, the recorder was placed in a furnace, where 1100 °C was fixed, and kept in it for 60 minutes, after which the information was considered almost in its original form. However, the machine fell into the water, which eliminates the thermal destruction of the recorder.

Thus, the statement of the Minister of self-defense Forces of Japan Takeshi Iwaya about the state of one recorder can indirectly indicate the explosion of the aircraft in the air, because in a collision with water, the duration of the shock pulse increases to several tens of milliseconds, which in turn reduces the g-force to a level clearly below the destruction about the hint of Patrick Shanahan promised to demonstrate some “opportunities” to find the second “black box” — the Registrar of sounds in the cockpit. L-3 Communications company completes the flight recorder with a special sonar transmitter capable of operating 90 days underwater and withstand a depth of 6000 meters. Meanwhile, in the area of the fall of the Japanese F-35 depth does not exceed 1500 meters.

If the civil aircraft underwater beacon is activated automatically after immersion in water, the military uses another — a secret algorithm. Of him, no doubt, the Americans did not tell their Japanese friends. However, it is not clear what valuable information can carry a sound recorder because there was only one pilot in the cockpit.

It seems that the death of the Japanese F-35 will go down in history as another mystery that will not be solved. Of course, the investigation reports will be written and even approved. The blame, of course, on a bad Assembly at the factory Mitsubishi. Although this may be exactly the case when the artificial intelligence programmed in the on-Board computer, once again “went crazy” and made a number of steps that led to the destruction of the aircraft.
