Candidate for the presidency of the Christian Democratic Union Party and probable future Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Maertz called for a moratorium on the construction of “Nord Stream – 2”. He said this, speaking at an event of the CDU youth organization in Lower Saxony.
“I believe that we must finish the construction. We should not become too dependent on the Americans or on Russian gas for energy supply,” the BILD quotes Merz.
He added that he considers it necessary to maintain a moratorium on the gas pipeline project implementation for 2 years.
“Nord Stream 2 envisages construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Russia via the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is actively opposed by the USA, which promotes its liquefied natural gas to the EU, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries.
The project is being implemented by Gazprom through Nord Stream 2 AG.Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, Engie, Uniper and Wintershall and is being financed by half, approximately 950 million euros each.
