Trump calls wall on Mexico border a protection against coronavirus

U.S. President Donald Trump says a partially built wall on the border with Mexico is helping to prevent new cases of coronavirus infection in the country. He said this on Fox News,

The American leader reminded me that the length of this barrier is 275 miles (more than 440 kilometers). At the same time, in the coming months, the wall may become about twice as long.

According to the owner of the White House, the presence of a part of the wall on the border with the neighboring state has reduced the number of illegal immigrants coming to the U.S. from Mexico, including those infected with the coronavirus. “As you know, Mexico has a very serious pandemic situation. Because of the wall, we are not heavily negatively affected by Mexico. It’s wonderful,” the president concluded.

As of August 5, there are more than 18.3 million coronavirus infections worldwide, of which more than 695,000 have died and another 10.9 million have recovered. The most infected area in the United States, where more than 4.7 million people became ill with COVID-19. Mexico is in sixth place in the number of infected with 443,000.

Trump promised to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border during his 2016 campaign. He introduced a state of emergency in the country to redistribute funds from other projects. In the summer of 2019, the Supreme Court approved the allocation of $2.5 billion from Pentagon funds for the construction of the wall.
