The former president says Republican senators face defeat if McConnell remains minority leader
Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, signaling a growing feud between the two most important voices in the Republican Party.
“Mitch is a morose, scowling, and un-smiling politician, and if Republican senators stay with him, they won’t win again,” Trump said amid the conclusion of the former president’s second impeachment trial.
Trump and McConnell’s positions diverged after the Nov. 3 presidential election.
Trump was annoyed that McConnell recognized Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the election.
The rift between the two widened when McConnell told the Senate on Saturday that Trump was “practically and morally responsible” for the Jan. 6 Capitol assault that resulted in fatalities.
