Trump intends to leave in Germany 25 thousand military

In Germany, there are more than 34 thousand US troops, while the American leader speaks of 52 thousand.

US President Donald Trump has promised to reduce the number of US troops in Germany to 25 thousand. This was reported on June 15 by Interfax.

The head of the White House explained his decision by saying that Berlin pays to NATO only one percent of GDP, although it must pay two. Thus, according to Trump, Germany brings the alliance.

“Why should we do what we do (providing Germany with military protection – ed.) If they do not pay?” – emphasized the US president, adding that he would return all the military when the Federal Republic of Germany increases the defense budget.

According to German media, Washington did not inform Berlin in advance of its decision.

It is also indicated that speaking of 52 thousand American troops in Germany, Trump had in mind 34.5 thousand soldiers and officers, as well as 17 thousand US civilians serving in the armed forces.

In turn, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the reduction in the American contingent unsurprising, describing the relations between the two countries as complex.

Earlier it became known that Trump ordered a reduction in the number of US troops in Germany. According to media reports, by September they planned to withdraw 9.5 thousand American soldiers and officers from the Federal Republic of Germany.
