The visit was announced after the arrest of 53 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.
U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kelly Kraft will travel to Taiwan, showing support for the island’s autonomy from the Communist Party of China (CPC).
“The United States supports the people of Hong Kong and all those who yearn for freedom,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. – “In this regard, I am pleased to announce the upcoming visit of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Kraft to Taiwan, which is a reliable partner and a thriving democracy, despite the CCP’s attempts to undermine its great success.
Pompeo announced Kraft’s trip after the mass arrest of 53 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.
“Taiwan demonstrates what a free China can achieve,” Pompeo said.
A high-ranking Chinese official responded by saying that “the U.S. side will pay a high price for its misguided actions.”
