Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said this in a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has expressed U.S. concerns about Egypt’s possible purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter jets, the State Department said.
Blinken said this in a telephone conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
“The secretary of state and the foreign minister emphasized the importance of the strong strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt, particularly in the security sphere and continued cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and exchanged views on regional issues,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
“The secretary of state expressed concerns about human rights, which he stressed would be central to the U.S.-Egypt bilateral relationship, as well as Egypt’s potential purchase of Su-35 fighter jets from Russia,” Price added.
Blinken and Shoukry also discussed support for UN-sponsored peace talks in Libya, the Middle East peace process, and counterterrorism cooperation in the Sinai Peninsula, Price said.
