Republicans in the New York State Legislature have demanded that Governor Andrew Cuomo resigns after reports of an alleged cover-up of the number of deaths from the coronavirus, Politico magazine reported.
The New York Post earlier said that a senior Cuomo aide, Melissa DeRosa, apologized in an online meeting to the state’s Democratic lawmakers for rejecting the lawmakers’ demand for a full count of deaths in nursing homes. At the same time, she said, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Democratic governors for high nursing home death rates about demanding the Justice Department conduct audits.
After the report was published, virtually all New York Republicans criticized Cuomo. Nick Langworthy, chairman of the Republican Party in New York State, said that under these circumstances, discussions of holding the governor accountable “should begin immediately.”
“If the governor is implicated, he should be removed from office immediately,” Langworthy added.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 27 million cases of the coronavirus have been identified in the U.S. throughout the pandemic, and more than 468,000 people have died.
