Beating and torture in Ministry prisons
The United States imposed sanctions on Cuba’s Interior Ministry on Friday, accusing the agency of serious human rights abuses.
In a statement, the U.S. Treasury Department cited Cuban dissident Jose Daniel Ferrer, who was held in a prison controlled by the Interior Ministry, where he was beaten and tortured.
“The United States will continue to use all leverage at its disposal to remedy the appalling human rights situation in Cuba and elsewhere in the world,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
Washington also put Cuban Interior Minister Lazaro Alberto Alvarez Casas on the sanctions list.
