U.S. imposes sanctions on Myanmar military

The United States imposed sanctions against eight individuals and three jewelry companies in connection with the coup in Myanmar. This was reported by Reuters, citing the U.S. Treasury Department.

The sanctions were imposed on military leaders: Myint Swe, who led the country, Mya Tun Oo, who was appointed defense minister, Lieutenant General Soe Htut, Minister of the Interior, Major General Ye Win Oo, in charge of military security, and others. The jewelry companies include Cancri Gems & Jewellery Co., Ltd., Myanmar Imperial Jade Co., Ltd., and Myanmar Ruby Enterprise.

Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden seized Myanmar property in the United States.

On February 1, the military of Myanmar staged a coup d’état. They explained the overthrow of the country’s leadership by widespread fraud in the elections held in November. The police accused the overthrown government of violating the law. A state of emergency was declared in Myanmar for one year.
