Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said he initiated an urgent conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov because of the escalation of the conflict in Donbas.
“Today, in the zone of the SOS (operation of the combined forces – Ed.) illegal armed groups committed provocations, which resulted in the death of one Ukrainian soldier and one was wounded. These are obvious attempts to derail the ceasefire and create significant obstacles to the peace process as a whole… I initiated an urgent conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the current situation and ways out of it,” Kuleba said on his Facebook page on Sunday.
On July 27, additional measures to ensure the truce came into force in Donbas. These measures include a total ban on fire, the deployment of weapons in and near populated areas, offensive and reconnaissance, and sabotage. They also provide disciplinary responsibility for violations of the ceasefire. Ceasefire orders containing measures to maintain it must be in place until the conflict is fully resolved.
Ukrainian authorities in April 2014 launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed LPR and DNR, which declared independence after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014. According to the latest UN figures, about 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
The issue of resolving the situation in the Donbas is discussed, in particular, during the meetings in Minsk of the contact group, which since September 2014 has adopted three documents regulating steps to de-escalate the conflict. However, even after the armistice agreements between the parties to the conflict, skirmishes continue.
