US President Donald Trump has promised to stop the riots.
“We cannot and will not allow a small group of criminals and vandals to destroy our cities,” Trump said, speaking in Florida.
“My administration will stop the violence of the crowd, completely stop it,” Trump said.
According to him, the violence, which “has nothing to do with justice and the world,” is led by “Antifa and other radical left groups.”
“We will support the memory of George Floyd and all law-abiding citizens,” Trump promised.
He added that he asked the Department of Justice to expedite the investigation into the death of Floyd at the hands of the police.
“The death of George is a great tragedy, it should not have been,” Trump said.
The death of George Floyd caused riots in Minneapolis and other cities after the appearance of a “viral” video of the detention of Floyd. The video shows that the police knocked Floyd down and handcuffed him, with one of the officers kneeling over Floyd’s neck. The detainee first says several times that he cannot breathe, and then faints. Floyd was hospitalized and died in intensive care.
When this information became widespread, the city police announced the dismissal of four officers who took part in the detention. The city held protests, accompanied by vandalism and fires. The FBI joined the investigation into the death of Floyd, which declared this case a priority.
